The Webcam Project
2004

The Webcam Project deals with society in the era of technology. The project consists of a documentation of webcams from all over the world as they are released into the Internet. The Webcam Project shows individuals and their attempts to relate to each other trough a medium that offers absolute freedom, and eliminates all social restrain, for the first time in history, giving every single person the opportunity to become whomever they want to be and to do whatever they want to do without having to face any type of consequences, yet this medium doesn’t allow physical interaction, so a strong physical tension is always present between the desires and needs of all these individuals and the limitations of the media. Interaction in a time where technology is overtaking the flesh and people rather communicate virtually than in reality.

Identity is also explored, as people become their fantasies. The idea of a public persona, a projection of the desired self into the world. The discrepancy between the way people see themselves and the way they want to be seen emerges.

By showing the reality of a parallel world lived trough machines, a world that is not fiction, is happening now, The Webcam Project aims to generate an awareness of this phenomena and the circumstances by which society arrived to this point.
